I was hoping to take many factors into account, including quality of life in the city, cost of living, cost of season pass, drive time to mountain, quality of snow, etc. I think cities within 90 - 120 minutes of the mountain should be included. My top three are Denver, Seattle, and Portland.
If you had to rank the "best big cities" in America, what would your list look like? I’m doing this research b/c I’m thinking of moving and I want to live in an area that offers big city living. I think the ideal “big city” not only has a large, dense population with a sprawling metro area, but also great nightlife/culture and restaurants, a bustling job market, big time sports, a “global city” reputation w/ lots of diversity, good public transportation and is also a tourist destination. With these parameters in mind, I created a five-tiered list of my own that classifies U.S. cities in terms of their urban appeal. Any feedback or arguments? Which cities should have made my list but didn't? Tier 1 -New York -Los Angeles -Chicago Tier 2 -Boston -San Francisco -Washington, DC -Miami -Dallas Tier 3 -Houston -Philadelphia -Atlanta -Seattle -San Diego Tier 4 -Denver -Phoenix -Minneapolis -Baltimore -Las Vegas -Detroit Tier 5 -Pittsburgh -Cleveland -Austin -St Louis -Portland, OR -Charlotte -Nashville -Milwaukee -New Orleans

big cities are starting to make people pay a fee to drive into their downtown area? are you in favor of this, and why or why not. Does anyone know "why" they are doing this? I mean, what are they planning to do with the money? And will workers have to pay the same amount as visitors do? Can you imagine yourself on a trip (like maybe north to south) and trying to save time by driving thru the big city only to get hit with this "use" fee.
Why are the top rated restaurants always in big cities? Isn't it possible and more likely that there are restaurants out there that have better pizza, sandwiches, steaks, etc that aren't in larger cities? It seems like these placese are just chosen because of their big location, or they only look at big cities when considering best places.

In which big American cities are the pretty single girls found in abundance? I know this may sound a bit ethnic, but actually I'm a single 30 year old white male, and I'm very much attracted to European-style Nordic women (slim physique, light coloured skin, coloured eyes and straight light coloured hair). I know that America doesn't have the same percentage of these women as in Britain or Scandinavia, but which big American cities with its suburbs has the highest percentages of Nordic women? To make myself clearer: In which big cities in USA will a guy find slim single women of Scandinavian, British and Dutch origin? Only serious answers please; for there is no room for joking here.

Are big cities still commonly using salt in the winter? Here is my answer : --Yes large cities are still using salt in the winter. I live in New York City and salt is thrown down plenty during the vicious winter. Although it causes many complaints, it is still being used. As previously stated, it is cost effective which also makes it a good choice for large cities to use. I did not research it, just used experience. But I'm not sure if its correct or incorrect. This is for my Rock Salt homework assignment for Chemistry Honors So I was just wondering if my answer was correct?

What is the best way to find a HOUSE for rent in a medium-sized town (a.k.a. not a big city)? We are looking for a house (house is preferred over an apartment if we can find one) to rent in Dickson, Tennessee. A small, 1 bedroom house would be okay at this point because it will be just us and we are looking for something less than $500 a month. We were just wondering what the best way is to find a house for rent since neither of us have ever had to look on our own before now. Newspaper, ask around, etc.? Thank you! :)
What is the Fastest, and maybe the best, way to reduce Crime in big American cities? I say the best, fastest, and quickest way to reduce crime in the US is to legalize Drugs. Control it, don't outlaw it because too many people want drugs. Just like Prohibition created criminals, and built up the Mafia, modern drugs are creating criminals. Plus alcohol and tabacco cause much more damage so why not make them illegal? The other way to reduce crime is to flood the streets with well-trained COPS. Spend $10 million to hire a bunch of police instead of spending $20 million to incarcerate drug dealers. Instead of spending $100 Billion in Iraq, spend it here to protect the citizens. Wouldn't that work?
Should big cities with large populations have more of a say with reguards to foreign policy? the redneck republicans preach there nonsense from some farm in the middle of nowhere. everybody knows big cities are the targets for terrorists and big cities tend to be more liberal. since its NYC,LA,CHI etc who are most prone to attack shouldnt they have more influence reguarding international relations? the hick in iowa or the trailer park resident in alabama want war to escalate, but there butts arent on the line.the civilized city dwellers are generally against war because they know that when our enemies react it is the major cities that will suffer.shouldnt this be taken into consideration. i live in NYC,saw the towers go down with my own 2 eyes.not through a tv that made it feel make believe.so as red states bang the war drum i cringe because i know the electoral college does not favor my situation. i dont mean to offend anybody, but how many military bases on this continent have ever been attacked? there is a reason that they are located in the middle of nowhere. get real.the only places that will get attacked are the major cities.major cities that typically vote against war mongering because we know we have the bullseye on our backs. unless you live in a big and important city you would not undersatnd this very real concern. hell id be down for dropping bombs and boots wherever if i knew that i would be safe from retaliation. sadly that just is not the case.
Small town people hate big cities generally. Why? I live in rural Kentucky, but make the trek to Louisville between 10-25 times a month for school, socializing, and what have you. I'm used to the drive, it doesn't bother me. I work at a Wal-Mart in my rural town. Whenever there's a product we don't have, I often have to recommend that people have to drive to the next town up (we have 10,000, the next town has 30,000 population.) People go ballistic because they have to drive only TEN MILES to this next town because they hate the "big city attitude" and "big city traffic." I don't call any Kentucky city "big," I'm sorry. Why do you suppose small towners can't stand big (or, "big") cities? Also, if small-towners are supposed to be so friendly, then why are small towns typically closed-society type of places that shun outsiders? That doesn't seem friendly.
what are some big cities? i want to go to college in a big city! like a big big city. but the only big cities i can think of is nyc. does anybody know any others?
Who thinks big cities breed lonliness? I met more people in Cedar Rapids than I have in Chicago in 6 years.? Big cities are very bad for lonliness. Sometimes, it seems as if they were specifically built for lonliness. So many strangers that won't talk to or even look at you. In my skyscraper I work in, no one will give you the time of day. In the starbucks on the main people, you just see individuals sitting by themselves, using a book as cover for their solitary situation. I'm sure most of them would rather have some companionship. You can see them looking when someone actually has an animated, happy conversation, and the books aren't such an effective cover anymore. People are scared to meet people in big cities, because of the crime as well. They just walk back solo to their condo or apartment, and maybe play with the cat a bit, before they go to sleep alone........ this is beyond sad........anyone else here had the ennui and lonliness of big cities? Honestly. the only people that say anything to anyone downtown are the homeless bums looking for money. so sad, isn't it? Connie makes me think now about big city life. Her point is that commuting itself is a rat-race, with the consequent road-rage, and the cutting people off thing. We "bowl alone", according th Connie, because we relish the peace of our homes...................... That would be true, except for the fact that the suburbs we go home to are hellishly crowded as well....I fight with as many if not more people on my suburban streets than the city itself, where at least pedestrians are somewhat respected. In my suburb, they aalmost seem to be trying to run over you if you cross the street, and you look weird walking because everyone drives. People "bowl alone" in the city AND suburbs...... Lets face it, most people in cities and their burbs have a little handful of friends, and everyone else is a stranger, who, in fits of raod rage, are a jerk or a-hole if they happen to be driving faster or slower than us. It very much sucks to live in a major city or its burbs. Is there a option"
Why do Big Cities tend to vote Democratic? I am wondering why big cities tend to vote Democratic (e.g. Manhattan, San Francisco) when these cities tend to be very rich and have a lot of members of the capitalist class.... I would think, attempting to look at the issue neutrally, that they would tend to favor Republicans as Republicans tend to be proponents of lower taxes...whereas the Democrats tend to want to tax the majority of the people who live in these cities, who are rich, a higher percentage of their income. ........On the other hand, could it be that big cities tend to be more liberal socially (e.g. Gay Marriage, Pro Choice) and that this trumps the economic differences of the two parties? Again, i am trying to get an honest answer, not a political opinion. Thanks!
Small town people hate big cities generally. Why? I live in rural Kentucky (hillbilly hell,) but make the trek to Louisville between 10-25 times a month for school, socializing, and what have you. I used to live in Louisville, but financial circumstances caused me to move back in with my parents in the country. I work at a Wal-Mart in my rural town. Whenever there's a product we don't have, I often have to recommend that people have to drive to the next town up (we have 10,000, the next town has 30,000 population.) People go ballistic because they have to drive only TEN MILES to this next town because they hate the "big city attitude" and "big city traffic." I think to myself, "have you ever been to Louisville, much less Atlanta or Houston?" I've even said that out loud to a couple of customers! Why do you suppose small towners can't stand big (or, "big") cities? Thanks! Here's my argument, though: small towns are generally boring places, full of closed-minded people who don't like to get to know you until they think you're one of "them." Kinda rude, wouldn't you say?

Why are people that live in big cities more liberal than people that live in small cities? It seems like, in general, people that live in big cities are more liberal than people that live in small cities. New Yorkers, for example, are in general more liberal than people that live in Des Moines Iowa. People in Boston are more liberal than people that live in Lincoln Nebraska, and people in San Francisco are more liberal than people in Bismark North Dakota. It's not an exact relationship. Obviously, there are conservatives in big cities, but in general it seems like big cities are more liberal. I'm not judging or advocating that trend, just observing it. What are the reasons for that?
Subcultures in big cities? I live in Toronto, which is a huge city. However, I've noticed we have a lot of little subcultures - who tend to form close groups, and generally stick together. Sometimes it's more like a series of small towns than anything. I guess I'm part of the queer feminist subculture in my city. I've noticed whenever I go to events (Shows, concerts, festivals, etc.) I always see the same people there. We've all become friends, and they all know each other! Last night, I was at a spoken word/performance art show, and I saw eight people I knew - which is huge, especially since it was a small theatre. My father, who works in the financial industry, experiences the same kind of thing - all the people he knows ten to know each other. My question is, do other cities kind of function like this? Like a group of small subcultures, rather than one big cohesive group?
Other big cities not far from Chicago? I am considering a trip to Chicago in the spring, and I've never been. To maximize on the trip I'm wondering what other big cities reachable by Greyhound I could visit for a day. What cities would those be and what are some great places to not miss? I'd appreciate some good input on this. Thanks.
whats up with retail stores in big cities? I have been to walmart in St Paul Mn.big city,,and Target in Minneapolis Mn..another big city I also shop at subrban stores, walmart and target. They seem to have better quality in the suburb stores and more choices why is that? is it because low income families and immigrants live in the cities that the retail stores do not care about these people and they have to please the suburb folks by giving them better quality and choices?
Question about hospitals and big cities? My question is - Why do hospitals not use helicopters in the big city more often to avoid traffic delays and accidents ? It is a known fact traffic delays medical service to the injured party and greatly increases the risk of death and permanent injury . Now I am not saying to get rid of all ambulances but I do believe we should replace at least 80 percent of them in all major cities with helicopters and before you say where would they land , well the roof , of course . Does anyone agree and if so how much would this cost ? they would land on top of the appartment buildings in cities such as New York and Chicgao

Are foreign embassies in the U.S. located only in big cities? I live in the Twin Cities area (Minneapolis-St. Paul) and there's an embassy only a few blocks from my home. Judging by the flag I think it's an Italian embassy. However I was pretty sure that embassies are usually only located in big cities, i.e. D.C. or NYC, can anyone clarify?

So many cows are roaming about on the roads in big cities of India, cant you do something? Recently when I visited India I was shocked to see so many cows roaming about in busy streets and roads in big cities. So many accidents, I witnessed few fatal, so many human lives are being lost because of these cows, beautiful expensive cars damaged to save one cow. Poor Rahri Walas' stuff eaten away in a split of a second who comes to make his living to feed his family. Sprinkling on clothes & faces and all the edible stuff stacked on the road side by the vendors look uncivilised and unhygenic hence bringing disceases, causing severe congestion and many deaths yet no body can even lash a stick to shunt them off. Is the cow so sacred that you do not care for human losses and all the mishaps to the victims and dont care for the society you live in? Dont you think it is illiteracy and has got nothing to do with religon? Can only one sensible Indian give me a logic of letting loose these stupid cows on busy roads which are meant soley for fast moving vehicles. Mahan Desh hai Tumhara!
Is the youth culture very different in small towns from the big cities? It seems like these days, with globalization and mass media and the internet youth culture is very similar no matter where you go. But do you think there are still noticeable differences in the youth culture (i.e. what clothe syoung people wear, what they do for fun, what music they listen to, dating rituals, etc.) between small town American and big cities/metropollitan areas?

Why do Californians and other people from big cities move to Idaho ? They say they are trying to get away from the things they hate about big city life, but upon moving here they want to change things to make them feel like they are home? would you like to see the railways creatively landscaped on the way into big cities......? i travel regularly on the trains and it allways disappoints me when the train enters the centre of a big city....they are such squalid entryways. trains are one of the major ways of arriving in a town....it seems to me the entryways could be such an opportunity to be used as a shop window for that particular city...instead of the rat-hole back alley kind of feel most routes have in to the centre. couldnt we have a bit of public art or sculpture....maybe some original landscaping...or even just some bright flowers here and there. isnt it time we beautified the rail-side so entering a city made you feel positive and [god-forbid] maybe even a little excited. any suggestions along similar lines?
What is the best job that could be learned in 2 years and that allow you to live in a big city ? I am training in general surgery now, i am somewhere in Eastern Europe but I would be very happy to live in a big city such New York, Paris, Rome, Sydney, Tokyo, Rio ... I am 30 yo, single, no children. I will became a specialist in general surgery in 3 years and that's no problem. But it doesn't make me very happy as long as I am not in a big city. I will try to find a job as a surgeon there but that means to study some years just to pass the legal aspect of the job, not the job itself. And i need to earn money during these years. Any PRACTICAL suggestions?
What kinds of places are best for highly introverted people to live in? Any specific cities/towns? I've heard some people say big cities are better because people mind their own business, you can be anonymous, and it's easier to find people who share your unique interests. However, I've heard others say small towns are better because of the stability, peacefulness, and less overwhelming stimulation. Which is best? Any particular places? Advice if you'd like to live in a big city someday, far from your family?
