Excluding places in Southern California, what are some of the best places to live in border states? I currently live in North Carolina, and are thinking about moving to either Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico. For those who live in those areas, what are the best places to relocate, considering living expenses, jobs, safety, amenities, etc.? Consider that we are a couple with a 1 year old little girl. I cross out Southern California. It's nice, but I've been there, and it's way too expensive.

Suggestions on best places to live in between the Bay Area and the L.A. area on the California coast? Hey all. I'm taking a trip out to California this summer from New England - I've never been before, and am thinking if I like what I see, I may consider an eventual move out there. I'm going to be spending a good amount of time in both Southern California and the northern parts, especially the Bay Area and Napa Valley, to get a basic "feel" for the environment. What I'm asking for is any suggestions you may have on places in between "Northern California" and "Southern California" - somewhere where it is mostly nice weather year round, the ocean is reasonably warm, there is plenty of things to do and stuff going on, low crime, good nightlife and good looking women, but also somewhere where you could escape into the forest or the mountains relatively easily, and get the best of both worlds. Some place where it's not outrageously expensive, is really fun and where there's never a dull moment, and where the people are laid-back and down to earth and fun... any suggestions?
