Are there still Cattle Drives in places like Texas and Canada?

I heard that Cattle Ranches in places like Texas still herd their beef cows to market the old fashioned way on horseback? Is this still the most prevalent way of herding cattle or have other methods been implemented?

Public Comments

  1. Possibly. I'm not all that up on it. Logical to assume the bulk of the work is still done that way, but what with still extensive rail lines it wouldn't be unheard of to have a buyer come in and look at the stock and tell the rancher what he wants, then have it shipped by cattle car. The rest is up to the drovers and the engineer.
  2. On a few of the huge cattle ranches, cattle are herded for miles to the nearest railhead but the long 3 state drives are no longer feasible.
