Recommended places to live in Puerto Rico?

What are some of the more recommended places to live in Puerto Rico? I my wife wants to learn Spanish and to learn a second language one must live in a country (and take language classes) that primary speaks that language. My work allows me to live any where so since I speak Spanish we are have decided to move here in the Spring of 09. We want to visit this Spring to get an idea of life in some of the cities but we are looking for suggestions for some of the neater/nicer/affordable areas to live in for a late 20's early 30's couple. I am thinking Old San Juan might be nice but without every being there I am not sure. Suggestions Anyone?? Work issues don't involve me as I will work from home or I may rent a small office but I can do that near where I live. I am more concerned about the quality of life, things to do and the people. I would like an area that is suited for our age. Not that we can't move around but we are planning on living in PR for two to three years. Nena, how much English is really spoken in PR? As much as my wife would enjoy living in an area that has English speakers (like a tourist area) I would to be in an area where it is rarely used. As even myself could use some brushing up on my Spanish. Nena, can I ask you some more questions? I have several about all sorts of things and would love to have someone to ask. Thank you for the links. Nena, how much English is really spoken in PR? My wife is going back to school and I am hoping she can take some regular classes besides just Spanish. How are the neighborhoods around UPR? I am leaning towards San Juan as sometimes I need to travel often for work and being in the city with the main airport might be convenient. If she/we decided to take classes, biology, business, etc. Is there a University that is preferred over the others at a reasonable price of course? I went to college in Ecuador and have worked in Mexico and those times were a very positive impact on my life and I really want to show my wife that same true life that is there. We live in Denver and when we visit Mexico she likes to go to the tourist towns because English is used a lot. However, when we do live there we will visit those areas just like any other tourist but I want to visit those areas not live in them.

  1. well it depends where are You going to work..heavy trafficc is a Big problem in the urban areas of Puerto Rico so San Juan , Carolina, Bayamon, Guaynabo and caguas are very centric areas (5 -15 minutes from the airport) but You'll have to get out of your house more than an hour before you start to work...
  2. Well since you have a job that allows you to work from home that is great. PR is a commonwelath of the US & you will find everything you have in the US they have in PR. San Juan is the largest city in PR. San Juan is like any city, it has really good parts & bad parts as well. There are tourists & lots of english speakers also. San Juan is great, especially if you like city life. Old San Juan is a nice area to live in. So is Ocean Park, Isla Verde & Condado. Check out this link, clasificados , below to look for a place to live. San Juan is also more expensive than smaller towns & there is alot of traffic & things that go along with city living. I am not sure how much you are looking to spend, but Guaynabo is a high class nice area. Fajardo, Ponce & Rincon & many other areas have nice spots too. When you come visit, rent a car & drive around the whole island, you will see what you like. Goodluck ---------------------- ADDED: Yes alot of people in PR know english, but its Not used often. Spanish is always used so you don't need to worry, But in San Juan people might see that you are american & use english with you thinking that you are a tourist. The regualr towns will immerse you in spanish more. Yes U can ask me more questions if you'd like..
  3. I had the boat at Fajardo for about a year before moving over here to Antigua. I liked Fajardo for many reasons, so you may like to look there... You couldn't pay me to live in S.J.... too many people and too much crime.
  4. san juan thats where its at the tourism the most pretist women on earth the clubs the food...nuff said
