Nice places to live in North Carolina or Virginia?

I'm 23 years old, soon to be a college grad. I'm single and want to relocate to a safe area that has plenty of opportunities for a young female, both socially and job wise. I don't like huge cities, but wouldn't mind a large town or medium sized city-- that is affordable, with things to do. I've looked into Charlottesville, VA...and have heard good things about Asheville and Charlotte, NC. Where are some good places to live in either state??

1. Asheville is a great city. I live about 45 mins from there and take weekend trips just to enjoy the town. The people are very friendly and there is always something to do. Asheville is rather expenisve so you may want to look into one of the smaller towns around it like Arden, Hendersonville, or anywhere in Buncombe county. Asheville is also a growing city with a lot of jobs in the market.
