1. I lived in Amherst, NY (right outside Buffalo) for 4 years. During my time there, based on crime rates it was the safest town in the United States: http://www.amherst.ny.us/police/safestcity.htm I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. For big-city excitement, Toronto is about an hour and a half's drive across the Canadian border.
