Where are the best affordable places to live in England?

Im planning on beginning my career in architecture there and I need to find an area thats affordable and just an all around good place to live.

4. cheshire, countrside and beautiful architecture and heritage, has a mixture of housing from small 2bed terraced from approx 100k to multi million pound homes. Some lovely spots.
5. i think up north is the cheapest... but the nicest are down south... like Cornwall, Somerset, Dorset, Devon etc... The city of Bath... Beautiful city... good architecture.. Nice place to live... Dunno about the price range though.
6. Newcastle is a great place to live and not TOO expensive...
