Where are the best places to live in France?

As part of my university degree, im going to live in France for a year and i was wondering if anybody had any recommendations for where to live. Consider nightlife, culture and being a metropole as top priorities!

1. I have a heavy bias in favor of Paris but you might also consider Aix which is a great university town with a very ancient history.
2. Do take a peek at Nantes, it scores very high in recent French polls as being a dynamic place to live. A historic city yet still very much on a human scale with great transport links. You could be in Paris by TGV in a jiffy or relaxing on beautiful beaches along the Atlantic coast. Ryanair do a regular shuttle from East Midlands to Nantes. Should you fancy a cuppa during your year there, check out La Cigale, it's lovely!

4. the further south you go, the better. Aix, Nice, Marseilles, San Trope .....
