- I am an American living and working here in Japan. You can ask me any Qs you have. You'll need a job before you come because they need to sponsor your work visa. You'll have to go to the Japanese Embassy to get all of your paperwork and eventually to get your work visa. Look online for jobs. What do you want to do? I am an English teacher. You can easily get a job doing that if you have a college degree and if you are from an English speaking country. Or just look online for jobs. Yes it is true that Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world. Apartments are just crazy there. Small and expensive. I live in a city of 350,000 and pay a decent rent and have a decent sized apartment. My suggestion is to avoid Tokyo and Osaka. In those cities, rent can cost you 70,000-80,000 yen ($700-800 US) for a small apartment. In my medium sized city I pay 50,000 yen (about 500 US) for a decent sized place.
- Hello, I am Japanese student at university in Ishikawa-pref. I don't know your budget, but apartment rent is at least 35,000yen per month. Of course, dormitories are cheaper. You are looking for a good place, aren't you? I want you to come Ishikawa-pref. Because it has beautiful places, and traditional cultures(for example, flower arrangement, Judo, Somo and so forth.) . Please check this web site. http://www.city.kanazawa.ishikawa.jp/index_e.html Good luck!

- when my husband and i moved to japan, we had four thousand dollars (u.s.) and used all of it to get settled. you'll need money to travel by trains and cabs. our rent was about $1000 a month and it was 650 square feet. you can get ones as cheap as $400 a month or so, but it's smaller and further from train stations. food is expensive in japan also if you like to eat well.
