best places to live

What is the best towns or cities in the greater New Orleans to move in?

My family is moving to New Orleans next winter. I want to find the best town/city to move in, the location has to be in the suburbs, with good schools for my kids, very family oriented town/city, I don't mind the commute time, good house with a good price, low crime rate and it has to be within the New Orleans metro area. Which is the best city/town to move in.

  1. Lower 9th ward- I've heard great things...
  2. you can look this up on a website or speak to a realtor. there are hundreds of good areas to live in in New Orleans. but if you are not familiar with this city, or you have never been there, beware... it's a little different and strange.
  3. Well, I would say St. Tammany Parish, but it seems everybody has moved here since Katrina. But we do have excellent schools, low crime rate. It takes about 45 minutes to get to New Orleans. Metairie and Kenner are okay too.
  4. Belle Chasse has good schools and that family oriented low crime environment you are looking for.
  5. Metairie is very safe, clean, and close to the city. There are several great schools, malls, and parks. It is literally right next to New Orleans. The difference in safety levels between the city and Metairie is amazing (and well a bit depressing). Kenner is also good, but less family oriented. If you are looking even further out, you can get a really nice house for cheap in LaPlace (it is about a 40 minute drive from NOLA though). Be sure to grab a snowball at Sal's on Metairie Road, no matter where you eventually move to.
  6. St.Tammany...
  7. Welcome! Don't completely ignore the City in your search for suburbia. Most of Algiers (which didn't flood) has typical a USA suburban environment (housing & schools) with no more and maybe fewer problems than you find in the actual suburbs. Other desirable neighborhoods in New Orleans are in the French Quarter area, Warehouse District, most of "Uptown", the Broadmoor area, around Bayou Saint John & City Park, Lakeview, and the Lakefront. Lakeview flooded badly and is recovering, but it will be a while before that is complete. The other areas in the list either didn't flood or have recovered. New Orleans is geographically quite large and commuting times from the suburbs to the city center can be an issue, even though you say you don't mind. I recommend you try to live reasonably close to work/school - and you tend to get what you pay for. Note that the news media deliberately sensationalizes incidents of violent crime and does so in a way that makes the average citizen afraid. Reality is that almost 98% of shootings & murders occur within the illegal drug community and the other 2% are "domestic" incidents. That doesn't make the crimes OK, but the average resident (or tourist) doesn't have to worry about it. New Orleans is not even in the “top 25 most dangerous cities”: http://money.cnn.com/2006/10/30/real_estate/Most_dangerous_cities/index.htm
