Where are the best cities and neighborhoods to live in the Southern CA desert?

I hope to look for a home for sale this summer. Where are the best neighborhoods? 55 years old.

1. Yucaipa is a good city to live in.
2. The desert is a love hate thing. Don't live in Barstow, Octellio Wells is beautiful but way out. Hemit is more populated and sort at the "edge" of the desert. Victorville is growing and seems nice. If you are looking for retirement communities, Palm Springs and Beaumont. You are talking about a HUGE area, if you could be more specific on what type of things you are looking for you could get more specific feed back.
