Where is the best place to live in the U.S. if your income is below $10,000 a year?

I live in Philadelphia now.

3. Gary, Indiana. You can live large there with that kind of cash!
4. Fall River Massachusetts has some reasonable apartments. However, city life can be rough.

8. Forbes magazine did an article on the 150 cheapest places to live. The places are presented slideshow style if you click on the headings on the left (Happy Hooterville, etc) http://www.forbes.com/2005/10/31/karlgaard-broadband-telecommuting_cz_rk_1101liverich.html $10,000 isn't much but if you are eligible for other benefits like housing because of some sort of disability or something, you may be able to do ok. There are also a lot of message boards for thrifty living, etc. In general, the farther away from a big city you are the cheaper it gets.
9. The Midwest and the South generally have the cheapest cost of living. And as someone else said, usually the farthest you are away from a major city, the cheaper it gets.
