I am going to be moving to a large city from living in a small city, what is the best GPS device for driving?

I don't want the most expensive one, but I don't want to waste money on the cheapest one and not have it do what I need. Any suggestions? Also, do you have to pay for the service yearly or monthly? Is there any service or are you able to use it out of the box? I have no idea how to approach this or what I need to look out for. Any advice or suggestions would be helpful :D

  1. Here is your answer: You want a Garmin 2610 (or other 2600 series). The 2610 is the base model and will do it ALL. No, there is NO subscription service with GPS. NONE whatsoever. The cheaper GPS units come with maps on CD's or DVD's and you have to upload the areas you want to the Unit. However, you only have to do this once- i.e., you download your entire state to the unit, and maybe another state you vacation to, etc. Whatever you do, go with Garmin b/c a lot of manufacturers have cute units (like TomTom) but their mapping is TERRIBLE. The maps are the most important part of the unit! You want to make sure you see at least 6 million points of interest in the advertisement!!! These are things like hotels, food, gas, shopping, etc. When I travel ANYWHERE it's like knowing where everything is. When I rent a car in a state I've never been before it's like I grew up there or something. You won't even believe how easy it is!!! Also, you want a 2600 (or newer) from Garmin b/c they have REMOTE CONTROLS. I know, you probably think you don't need one, but believe me when you're driving you don't want to be reaching for the unit to make changes, etc. It will save you from getting in an accident.
