Are big cities still commonly using salt in the winter?

Here is my answer : --Yes large cities are still using salt in the winter. I live in New York City and salt is thrown down plenty during the vicious winter. Although it causes many complaints, it is still being used. As previously stated, it is cost effective which also makes it a good choice for large cities to use. I did not research it, just used experience. But I'm not sure if its correct or incorrect. This is for my Rock Salt homework assignment for Chemistry Honors So I was just wondering if my answer was correct?

  1. most cities use a combination of salt and sand but basically yes they're still using it.
  2. The big cities in eastern Canada certainly do. In the west and the north, it is used less and less. In the far north, where it can get very cold, salt is not used because it will freeze as well and not be able to melt ice. In those cases, they just plow as well as they can and lay down a fine gravel abrasive to give some traction at intersections. The salt from the winter roads in the east will eat a car away like cancer after after a few winters, so many people buy used cars that they know were purchased on the west coast or in the south.
  3. Yes, they use salt, gravel and rough sand. This is true for both American and Canadian cities. But in upper part of Canada where it is hard to keep snow from becoming ice, they use special acid based industrial chemicals mixed with the salt.
