best places to live

Which are the most interesting yet cheap european cities?

I'm heading off interRailing and I plan on visiting paris, berlin, prague, krakow, vienna, split and florence in that order probably. Any tips from previous backpackers on particularly good hostels or sights to see for budget students?

  1. Try Athens!
  2. Berlin is great, Wroclaw, Poland is really cool (stay at the "Stranger" hostel near the Railroad station). Paris can't be beat, but it's expensive. Prague is getting too filled with Americans so try Liberec in Northern Bohemia. And try not to miss Dresden.
  3. In Croatia (try getting to Dubrovnik!!!) there are lots of private accommodation places. I actually got hooked up with Split accommodation from the guy whose place I was staying in Dubrovnik....BUT be careful of non-registered places (they will probably be super cheap...I payed about 15 pounds for a night) as they actually have tourist police to come and raid these places. I met a US guy who eneded up being fined about 100US dollars for staying in a non registered place! Croatia is cheap too. I also like Zargreb, its completely different in feel to dubrovnik/Split (being inland) but I enjoyed the feel of the place and it has some nice achetechture too. In Prague I stayed in a cheap place...compared to other places (Pivovar hotel...an old beer brewing place!), it was out in area9 (they have regions, the central areas are 1,2,3 etc so this place was out a bit , but about 7 mins walk to the metro...so you either pay for location or transport and time (but a week ticket was cheap anyway). Prague is so lovely. I also did a day trip(on a organised tour) to Cesky Krumulov....very worthwhile...its a lovely town in southern Bohemia and has a castle... Paris will be expensive too, comparative to Prague/croatia, but walking is easy, getting a museum pass can work out cheap if you go to enough of the museums and a metro pass (eg carte l'orange) will help your feet and the metro is great to get to most places of interest. I also like the Pere lachaise cemetary in Paris for something different. Lots of famous people are buried there (eg Jim morrison, Chopin, Oscar wilde) and the "monuments" (as opposed to head stones) are pretty amazing...its free to get in , but you can buy a map of the cemtary (and where people are buried) for about 2 euro.
