best places to live

Where is the best place in the USA to live "off the grid"?

I want to find a place about 5 to 10 acres so I can have a milk cow and some chickens, a small orchard, fruit and vegetable gardens. I don't need most creature comforts. Just want to live simply. I need someplace very affordable,(cheap land prices). Please be semi specific such as the state and county or the like.

  1. Alaska
  2. Michigan's upper penninsula
  3. Wyoming comes to mind. Michigan's UP has too short of a growing season, and very brutal winters. Also Montana is listed. I live in North Carolina and the western central part (a little north of Charlotte) has lots of nice land, and temperate weather. Also, here lots of counties allow farm animals (the county next to mine Bladen does, and it is close to Fayetteville for supplies)
