What are the best places to camp in the Atlanta, GA area?

I'm going to be moving to Hiram, GA in late September. I would like to camp in a tent as much as i can while im down here. Where are some of the better places to camp in a tent in Georgia, within a 100 mile radius of Atlanta?

  1. You arent too far from me! Helen, GA, which is north of Atlanta, part of the mountains is a GORGEOUS place to camp. Lots of beautiful scenery, creeks, waterfalls, hiking trails, and camping locations. I think the part we went to was called Unicoi State Park. It was about a 2 hr drive from Newnan, so it probably wont be that bad for you, but its definitely worth it! Good luck~!
  2. I believe Stone Mountain has a campsite and that's right there in the Atlanta area. They are very touristy and more expensive than most - but it's probably the closest to the Atlanta area that I'm familiar with. http://www.stonemountainpark.com/lodging-camping/pricing.aspx Also, check out the State Parks. Many offer camping and they usually are very clean and reasonable. http://gastateparks.org/net/go/GaStateReg.aspx?s=0.0.1.5 I think Red Top is just north of Atlanta and offers camping. Many of them offer camping, just not sure which ones are closest to Atlanta.
  3. There is Stone Mountain Park and local State Parks. The downside is that you are only aloud to stay for 14 consecutive days. Stone Mountains campsite are not the best if you are using a camper. The sites aren't level. Red Top Mountain between Acworth and Cartersville have nice sites. I would recommend McKinney Campground. Its on the lake and has some beautiful sites
  4. unicoi state park; Stone mountain.
