2. Yosemite National Park is rich with Indian names. Yosemite is the Miwok word for grizzly bear. The Miwok called the Yosemite Valley Alwahnee. Now there is hotel in the park named Alwahnee and a meadow. Alwahnee means "place of gaping mouth". Tenaya Lake was named after Chief Tenaya, an Indian Chief. Hetch Hetchy , valley similar to Yosemite Valley is derived from a Miwok Indian word for a grass with edible seeds. "Lehamite" Falls was an Indian word meaning "arrowwood".
