So many people say to avoid the big cities in Latin America such as Lima Peru but why?

So many people say to avoid the big cities in Latin America such as Lima Peru or Buenos Aires Argentina or Mexico City Mexico or Bogota Colombia, etcl due to crime. Why? What about it do they want you to avoid, besides pickpockets? What are the common dangers to avoid?

1. Lots of times it is crime. It can be for not being able to go out at night. You are restricted in that way. Also they can be very dirty, and not very pretty. But they are not horriable, just not the nicest.
2. I live in Bogota and I recommend it. You just need to know where is dangerous and where it is safe. North in Bogota is safe. I have travelled a lot through Lima, stay around the Miraflores area. Use common sense and don't flash money and jewelry. Read reviews and travel blogs of the area you will be going. enjoy
