Places to live in Chicago for a single mom and young child?

I'm a single mom with a 9yr old boy who may be transferring to Chicago fo r a job opportunity. I;d love suggestions on areas to live that are family friendly, safe and clean. Nothing too fancy.. we'll be looking for a 2-3bdrm condo or townhuse.. renting at first. I need to be close to downtown Chicago... west side. Thanks! let me clarify... i know where to look for rentals and housing. what i'm in searh of are rcommendations for good areas. suggestions on neighborhoods and communities. thanks!
