Can anyone suggest any good, small, cheap cities to live in California?

I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a small, safe, and cheap city to live in California. By small I mean with a population of about 100,000 or so. I don't want to live in a place with a pop. over 1,000,000. I'd prefer if there were any sports teams. Also a place that the apartments would be reasonably priced. And most important of all, a safe city. Hope someone can help.

1. well, you should have quit with good and small cities- cheap is where you have a problem in CA! You may have to add what you consider "cheap". I lived in CA most of my life and I can't help you!!!
