Where are the best places to live in South-Central Pennsylvania?

Our family lives in the DC area so we want to live in a more peaceful/laid-back area but still be close to DC. Where is the best place in South-Central Pennsylvania to live for a family? We are looking for a place that is more laid back but still is still close to shopping and restaurants? A good school system is important as well. Any thoughts?

  1. You have a great variety of choses. If it was me, I would probably buy some kind of hobby farm an hour away. That area is beautiful in the fall, and full of history. It is not for shopping and eating out. You do those things twice a year, but you have to live enjoying the scenary and so forth.
  2. The Hershey/Hummelstown area is a suburb of Harrisburg which has all the shopping and restaurants you could wish for, the laid back atmosphere, and has some of the best school systems in the state of PA. From the Hershey area to DC is about 2+ hours away by car. Another area slightly closer that fits the bill would be the Camp Hill area. About 1 hr 45 min from DC. Hope this helps!
