Where can i find places to volunteer in the summer outside california or the us?

I am currently a sophmore in high school and would like to spend my summer doing volunteer and charity work. I wanted to do this through special programs in which i could travel to places outside california or even the us. If anyone has read the book the sunflower, they could kind of understand what i am looking for. If you know where i might find something that costs little or nothing please let me know. I want an adventure that allows me to help others.
