Which Florida cities and counties were notorious for establishing turpentine camps?

Public Comments

  1. you might want to define "turpentine"
  2. Not sure if this will be helpful, but the 1938 document linked below has this: "Northwest Florida is the long arm of the State that extends along the Gulf Coast south of Georgia and Alabama and includes the 16 counties west of the Aucilla River (see map, fig. 1). It is a rather sparsely settled area in which only 26 percent of the total population of 254,000 (1930 Census) live in cities of 2,500 population or larger; most of the inhabitants live on farms and in lumber or turpentine camps. Pensacola near the western boundary, with over 30,000 people, and Tallahassee near the eastern edge, with about 11,000 people, are the only cities of more ihan 10,000 population." You might try contacting the West Florida Public Library. Libraries sometimes maintain files of old clippings (newspapers, etc.) and have information that can't be found through searches on the Internet. The URL for their contact form is: http://www.cityofpensacola.com/library/forms.asp?action=reference Good luck!
