Best places in Texas to live?

What towns/cities in Texas do you think are best for raising a family? I'm not usually one to be picky but it absolutely has to have low crime-rate, and good schools would be nice. What would you recommend in Texas as a family friendly place? Thanks for the answers!

  1. San Antonio is my favorite place. The people are friendly there, they have some good schools but like any place you will have to "fish" them out. Same with the crime rate, some parts will have higher crimes. I usually go in and google apartments/houses in that area and come up with the website that tells me all the statistics, to include crimes committed. It's a big help! I do believe Houston is/was on the top 5 list of places to live in Texas in one of the National polls.
  2. My brothers went to college in San Marcus, and I've always loved that area. there are lots of things to do like rafting, horseback riding, camping, hiking, not to mention the Schlitterbahn Waterpark nearby in New Braunfels.
  3. I would stay away from San Antonio. I agree that San Marcos is very nice, but it's a college town. I think Austin or Round Rock is a very nice place to raise a family. The weather there isn't as humid as Houston, crime rate is lower too. Houston has nice areas to raise a family, but it's expensive (West University or Bellaire.)
  4. Austin!
  5. Austin but I'm young & single & there IS much less humidity than Houston. Austin is very family friendly. Not to mention San Marcos & other surrounding communities being a nice getaway & not far like some1 else said. Houston also has too much crime.
  6. Of the larger cities in Texas, I would say San Antonio. It gets very hot there in the summer. Is it humid? If you are from El Paso, Arizona, New Mexico, San Antonio, is humid. If you are from Houston, deep East Texas, any of the southern states bordering the coast, San Antonio is not humid at all. They have enough moisture there to have some greenery but not the lush greenery of more humid places. I lived there in the early 60s. I have a niece living there now. Last summer she had a birthday party for her son. A man was there with his child and they had moved from Houston. In San Antonio apparently that family has some neighbors that you woudn't want as neighbors. However, he says when he calls home and his wife is complaining he ask her if she wants to move back to Houston and her reply is,"NO!" In San Antonio you can be outside after dark and it is still in the 90s but due to a good southeast breeze and relatively low humidities, it is very pleasant. It is the same if you are in the shade in summer. Now you stay out in that sun very long, it can dehydrate you. Also what might sister has noticed when visiting my niece is you can spend time outside after dark and not be bothered by bugs. Also in Houston you have pollution. Houston might be good for the young set who want a lot of night life but no way would I want to move there. After Hurricane Rita due to damages to our offices we had to work out of St. Joe's in downtown Houston for 30 days. Then the first part of 2006 we were told all of our jobs were being moved to Houston and we could transfer and we would get moving expenses. Out of more than 80 people, no one opted to transfer, even people with many years with Christus. They looked for jobs elsewhere. One man did take a job at the Houston office but he was already living there and commuting on weekends. One person who goes to Astro games frequently says she doesn't mind the 90 mile drive back and forth to see the games but no way would she want to live there. I don't know where you are from but in Texas a person is not required to yield if someone turns on the turn indicator light to change lanes like they are in the northeast and California. In a city the size of Houston, that can cause the law of the jungle. Actually, many in Houston will speed up to keep you from changing lanes. I find traffic manners in San Antonio far better. Houston could change its on laws regarding that. But in its driving laws and manners it is a great big overgrown redneck town. Some drive like cowboys on the freeways.
  7. Honestly... the Safest Cities in Texas I know of are League City and Sugarland. these cities have the lowest crime rate in houston area. they are also both the fastest growing small cities in america! if you go on this website you can find out ANYTHING! about the city!! Sugarland: http://www.city-data.com/city/Sugar-Land-Texas.html League City: http://www.city-data.com/city/League-City-Texas.html check out any city in the United States.
  8. I agree with "Ka6493" But out of TX larger cities, I would DEFINITLY say go to Houston, or Austin.
  9. I agree with the two people above me.
  10. San Antonio Texas ! ! ! !
