Dangers (crime, gangs) in Denver, CO?

I know every big/small city will have its bad apples. Just that, Denver, CO was rated one of the top 10 safest cities in America. To those who live there...... How is life? Do you feel safe? Lot of drugies and gang wars? What about the schools, do they seem safe for kids or is there lots of negative influence there?

1. Yes I feel safe in Denver. I walk by myself in most area of the city at night without concern. Yes there are negative influences. As in any town or village or big city, you have to be aware and use good common sense. You have a responsibility to teach your children good values that they will take with them. We lived near a small mountain town and were hiking up a backroad when a wild-haired, bearded guy can running out of an abandoned mine and chased us off. We just figured he was an old kook trying to find a little gold. A month later the police raided the meth lab that was hidden in the mine. It can happen anywhere.
2. I never feel safe in Denver . Last year my Brother had a flat tire and was mugged while changing it. He was on his way to work at 7:30 AM on Federal Blvd. (mugged in broad daylight on a major "busy" street) As to school it was safe when I went there, but only Denver school I attended was DU.
