Are there plans to ban driving in San Francisco or any other American city? Also in European cities....?

And other cities around the world?

  1. None that I've heard. However, some cities have thought of creating a toll system in/out of the city based on when you use the road. That is to say, rush hour toll will be much higher than early morning or post rush hour tolls. It already has been instituted in some Euro cities, but none in the US.
  2. There has been some talk about having downtown SF charge a use toll during certain hours; also a brief mention of having Market Street be closed to cars altogether. Those haven't gone anywhere; in the meantime, they're tripling parking meter costs to discourage cars, and man, is it working for me.
  3. There's talk, but it's not likely to happen. Actually, San Jose has an entire area of the city shut-down to cars. It's actually kinda nice. In SF... in some ways, it would be nice to see Market St. shut down, but impractical... you'd still need to allow thru traffic, since otherwise it would divide the city. It's hard enough to get to and from SOMA with all the weird one-way roads and shit... I can't imagine it being totally shut down.
  4. nothing has been proposed. but there has been talk of having a congestion charge in the downtown area during the day but nothing be pushing forward now. nothing else in any other American city. but in Mackinaw, MI there's no driving at all because its on a tiny island so there's no room for cars (excluding emergency vehicles)
