Crime in European Cities?

It seem anyone's willing to give a very truthful, upfront account of crime in paris. I'm 20 years old and a guy, obviously, and I've lived near Washington D.C. for some time. I've since learned the ins and outs of the city and how to survive and blend in. I'll be spending a month in Paris in July for an academic program (I'm a student) and I was wondering if someone could give me a very truthful account of how one should hold his own in Paris, or a similar city. What do the locals do to avoid being victim to crime? and what would be the most practical way to blend in, as i'm absolutely not one to act 'touristy' lol
