What makes European cities at the same latitude as those in North America warmer than American cities?

- The gulf stream. Warm water from the Gulf of Mexico flows nort up the US coast about till N Carolina & kicks out to the east & reaches Europe.
- Relative position in distance to the ocean. The closer you are, the warmer it is, usually.
- American cities on the East Coast get colder than European cities because the air currents generally move from west to east. This means that American East Coast cities are getting air in the winter that is coming from the frozen Midwest and Canada, while European cities are getting air from over the ocean. The same process makes American East Coast cities hotter in the summer than European cities. So European cities aren't warmer, they're actually more mild (less extreme). European cities are actually fairly similar in climate to cities at similar latitudes along America's Pacific coast.
- There are two ocean currents involved one that begins in the Mexico Gulf and ends near Ireland, which is a war current, and another one that begins in the arctic zone and ends in the eastern coast of north America, this one is a cold current.
- a) the Northern atlantic wind stream (goes north east from the equator making the British Ilslans, and France more temperate) . b).- The presence of a closed basin sea, receiving the sun rays at more constant rate than the great lakes, for instance which is the Mediterranean with its wind stream. /with southern winds from africa like scirocco, simun,etc......
- This is a two part answer. 1. The jet stream in the Northern hemisphere travels from west to east. This causes air masses to travel over the Atlantic Ocean. Since water holds heat energy much better than land, it helps keep the air mass warmer (relative to if it travelled over land). This then blows ashore and moderates Europe's temperature. Other examples would be mild Vancouver (by the Pacific Ocean) compared to say cold Winnipeg (inland) during the winter. The reverse happens during the summer. Land heats up much faster, so inland cities are warmer than coastal cities. 2.This ties in with #1 There is a warm ocean current that originates in the Gulf of Mexico which travels past the UK. This enhances the effects I described above. Hope this helps.
