Do European cities use DC instead of AC?
Public Comments
- No, they use 230v 5hz AC as their standard electricity.
- AC was found many years ago (late 1800's) to be by far the best way to supply electric power - because it is much less expensive to transmit long distances. AC is, therefore, used almost everywhere. Europe's AC runs at 50 cycle as compared to the US standard of 60 cycle. Cycles refers to the frequency with which the voltages fluctuates from 0 to max, etc. Many US appliances need adapters to run on 50 cycle current, although 60 cycle motor will run, but only at 80% of its rated power.
