Best small city for a day visit?
Hello, I am a freshman in college in NYC. I enjoy the city but also like getting out of it. I would like some suggestions for cities within 3-4 hours of NYC (I'd take Amtrak or bus) to visit, just for the day. I don't care in which direction, but I need to get away for a day! Thank you.

- Burlington, VT Albany, NY with very nice state museum and capital building tour, free. Lancaster, PA Amish town.
- Boston, Hartford, Long Island, Atlantic City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, etc...
- Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, NY. An hour outside of the city and the Sleepy Hollow cemetery has the graves of Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller. The cemetery is gorgeous and there's monuments that I've never seen anything of the like anywhere else. Read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow before you go for the full effect. Just get on the Tappan Zee Bridge and head west. Also, a few miles down the road from there is a town called Ossining with lots of Revolutionary War history.
- uhm.... Albany
- My favorite small town to visit is Lancaster, Pennsylvania. If you are interested in the Dutch Amish with family style restaurants, abounding farms & fresh produce, home made ice cream & desserts, great shopping outlets, & just the right mix of rural & urban, this is the place to see. If you like steamboats, there is The Fulton Steamboat Inn (located on a farm), or other various family resorts in the area. You can take a carriage ride with an Amish driver, watch how quilts are made, or visit a real working farm. If you want to step back in time, try Lancaster, Penn. Phyllis G.
