Best (most reasonable) cities to move to in South Florida?

Me and the wifey are thinking of relocating from Sunny California to Sunny Florida (South Florida). We loved it there. the people were friendlier and it was nice to see freeway signs without barbed wire and graffiti. (I know you have some graffiti, no need to respond to that). What are some cities that surround Miami that are more reasonable, and have a smaller town feel? I've heard Coral Gables but I'm not certain about how reasonable rents are. Homestead? Florida City? What are some others I should check out?
