- This is not as easy a question to answer as you may think! And the reason for this is because the field of marketing is so broad. There are many people that think marketing is either sales or advertising, but it's a lot more than that. To put it simply, everything involved with conceiving a product to getting it on the shelves, then managing the product once it's on the shelves, falls under the broad heading of marketing. As far as business endeavors that are involved in this process: Manufacturers --All over the country Advertising Agencies -- All over the country PR firms -- All over the country Wholesale Distribution -- All over the country What may be a better approach for you would be to narrow your choice of profession within the broad range of opportunities that exist within the field of marketing first. When I was in college, the joke was that everyone wanted to work in Cincinnati, Ohio. That is the home of Proctor & Gamble, probably the greatest consumer goods company in the country. But if you think you may want to work in the field of product development, then you would look for companies to work for, and not necessarily a region of the country. If you think Advertising or PR work might be more your thing, then New York might be the place to go, and it is generally known that "Madison Avenue" is the hub of that field. But San Francisco and Chicago are also centers for Advertising and PR firms, also. With respect to sales or wholesale distribution, you can be very successful working in just about any major metropolitan city. If I were you, I would decide on a career path first, then look at where the centers or hubs are. You don't necessarily have to go to Chicago, New York, or San Francisco to be successful in marketing. There are opportunities all over the country.
