Big cities are very bad for lonliness. Sometimes, it seems as if they were specifically built for lonliness. So many strangers that won't talk to or even look at you. In my skyscraper I work in, no one will give you the time of day. In the starbucks on the main people, you just see individuals sitting by themselves, using a book as cover for their solitary situation. I'm sure most of them would rather have some companionship. You can see them looking when someone actually has an animated, happy conversation, and the books aren't such an effective cover anymore. People are scared to meet people in big cities, because of the crime as well. They just walk back solo to their condo or apartment, and maybe play with the cat a bit, before they go to sleep alone........ this is beyond sad........anyone else here had the ennui and lonliness of big cities? Honestly. the only people that say anything to anyone downtown are the homeless bums looking for money. so sad, isn't it? Connie makes me think now about big city life. Her point is that commuting itself is a rat-race, with the consequent road-rage, and the cutting people off thing. We "bowl alone", according th Connie, because we relish the peace of our homes...................... That would be true, except for the fact that the suburbs we go home to are hellishly crowded as well....I fight with as many if not more people on my suburban streets than the city itself, where at least pedestrians are somewhat respected. In my suburb, they aalmost seem to be trying to run over you if you cross the street, and you look weird walking because everyone drives. People "bowl alone" in the city AND suburbs...... Lets face it, most people in cities and their burbs have a little handful of friends, and everyone else is a stranger, who, in fits of raod rage, are a jerk or a-hole if they happen to be driving faster or slower than us. It very much sucks to live in a major city or its burbs. Is there a option"
