Subcultures in big cities?

I live in Toronto, which is a huge city. However, I've noticed we have a lot of little subcultures - who tend to form close groups, and generally stick together. Sometimes it's more like a series of small towns than anything. I guess I'm part of the queer feminist subculture in my city. I've noticed whenever I go to events (Shows, concerts, festivals, etc.) I always see the same people there. We've all become friends, and they all know each other! Last night, I was at a spoken word/performance art show, and I saw eight people I knew - which is huge, especially since it was a small theatre. My father, who works in the financial industry, experiences the same kind of thing - all the people he knows ten to know each other. My question is, do other cities kind of function like this? Like a group of small subcultures, rather than one big cohesive group?

  1. yes, sydney(where i live) australia is like that also. it is a huge city of nearly 5 million people. people often compare it to toronto, apparently they are both very similar (exept for the climate- sydney is sub tropical, it's not even summer & most days are nearly 30c)
  2. I do believe that in big cities subcultures do emerge-it is a natural thing when you have a large group of people from different cultures/interests/races/etc. living "together".
  3. I heard, we are only six introductions from anyone in the world. I live in a small country town in oz, not the one with the yellow brick road. It's must be cool to observe such dynamics, This network runs like that, maybe everything, lots of little things doing there thing, to make up bigger things n stuff. Anyway I will see you round the subcultures, you queer feminist you.
