why do big cities has less motor viecle fatality crash per population? MA or NY have the lowest and WY has the highest rate of fatality crash.

- Because of the simple fact that the more people there are for the amount of fatalities to be spread across, the precentage will drop. There is also the fact that the large cities such as New York have much bumper to bumper traffic, whereas, the cities in Wyoming do not have a lot of that type of driving. (which allows the drivers that are in Wyoming to get up to higher speeds) Higher speeds equal more crashes, more crashes equal more fatalities. The good side of the larger cities is the fact that the more people there are in any given area, the longer it will take for the people to move around. Thus making travel somewhat safer for all.
- The WI Saint has good points. Also consider that so many people in the large cities travel by public mass transit. People in WY have to drive VERY long distances to get even to their nearest town.
- In NYC, people walk or take the subway, bus, or taxi. They don't own or drive cars.
- more speed zones,better policed...higher fines....
- the simple answer is congestion...............traffic move,s much slower..............many fender bender,s................few fatality,s.
- maybe another cause is that big cities are more lighted at night.
- All wrong answers. The right answer is because big city people can get to a Level 1 Trauma center quickly thereby saving their lives. In the big empty spaces of the West by the time help got to you and you got to a good hospital you may very well be dead already. I used to live in northern AZ and it was entirely possible to be well over 100 miles from the nearest hospital and much more than that to the nearest Level 1 Trauma center. To that disturbing statistic add the fact that you have areas where cellphones don't work , that the weather is not always good for flying rescue helicopters and an accident that you would easily survive in my native NYC would kill you in Wyoming.
- The people in the city have more intelligence than the country bunkins and dont ride (MUDERCYCLES)
- LARGER CITIES HAVE SAFER DRIVING CONDITIONS, MORE LAW ENFORCEMENT AND TYPICALLY SLOWER SPPEDS DUE TO MANY SIDE STREETS. ALSO YOU DO NOT NEED TO DRIVE AS FAR FOR WORK OR SHOPPING AND SUCH. WHERE IN THE RURAL AREAS A 30 MILE DRIVE TO WORK OR TO THE STORE IS COMMON ON A ONE LANE UNDEVIDED ROAD WITH NO SHOULDER AND A DEEP DITCH. THESE KINDS OF CONDITIONS WILL RAISE THE FATALITY RATE OF AN ACCIDENT, YOU CAN ALSO ADD A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF PEOPLE WHO ARE KILLED IN AN ANIMAL COLLISION.
- Traffic slows things down a lot.
