What is the best way to meet new friends in a big city?

I live in a big city and I need to make new friends. How can I meet new people (since there aren't people my age at my job)? The city is all about night culture -- and who can make decent new friends at a bar?! I'm not into that.... any advice?

6. Berry, check local newpapers or the net for social events for singles. What are your hobbies? There must be local groups, clubs or classes you could attend where you can meet other people with similar interest. Get yourself out and get involved in a community volunteer project.
