  1. As far as CA & the Southwest: If you're starting from northern CA - definitely go along Highway 1 if you have time for the scenic route - there's a myriad of things to see & do such as Monterey Bay/Carmel, the Hearst Castle, and Santa Barbara/Solvang. Either way, once you're headed east, try to hit Joshua Tree (about 2 hours east of L.A.) on the way out. It's worth it to spend a day there. From there, you could drive through Arizona on I-40 and hit Albuquerque/Santa Fe in New Mexico - it's a great place to visit and worth a couple days as well.
  2. The very best way to do this is fly between the two places. Not only is it faster but it ends up being much less expensive than road costs with gas, lodging and food. However, if that is not in your plans, then the very best way to do a trip from California to Alabama is to drive. You could plan out the route by using www.mapquest.com and it will give you thebest route. Gives the total number of hours, miles etc. However, if you happen to be a member of AAA, they have a wonderful bunch of guide books and will layout your trip for you. Excellent way to do it.
