best places to stop and sights to see from California to Chicago!?

Hello all, I'm moving to IL beginning of september and will be driving from Sacramento, CA to Chicago. I was wondering where i should stop (some detours are alright) and what are the best sights to see! i love awesome parks, towns etc. I was thinking arches national park as a stop and colorado? i need some help because i just dont know! my sister is coming from germany also..and has never been to the u.s! so i want to show her some cool places..and not torture her with a boring 4 day drive! thanks

1. Orange City, Iowa. Small dutch town known for it's tulip festival and windmills. Sergeant Floyd Monument in Sioux City Iowa, along with the Lewis and Clark Museums and such if you're into history.
2. Rocky Mountain National Park just north of Denver is fantastic. Also, Mount Rushmore and the surrounding areas are truly wonderful. I have put websites with info below. I hope you have a wonderful trip...this could be really memorable. Oh, by the way, the evening service at Mount Rushmore is unbelievably touching...try to attend if at all possible.
